A pantry makeover, before and after…
Did that space actually grow larger and taller with the addition of shelves or is it just me?
When we removed a pantry closet in our kitchen to move the refrigerator (more on that here), it decreased valuable storage space. What were we thinking?! What to do? Well, after much thought, the solution was to utilize an odd room/hallway to create more storage space. Lucky for us, that space exists in our home right behind the kitchen. Jackpot! Kismet. Fate. Whatever – it was finally time to make it happen!
The space is bigger than a hallway but six (6!) doorways make it too awkward to be a room. There are doorways opening to the kitchen, dining room, living room, old cellar stairwell, enclosed porch (original front door) and half bathroom. We walk through that room a gazillion times a day.
It’s approximately 6 ft. wide and 9 ft. long with 9 ft. ceilings. Ever since previous owners enclosed the front porch and re-routed the front door, this poor former entryway has been feeling forgotten. Perfect for some custom DIY industrial pipe shelving and a new job description as ‘open pantry’.
Where is all started: The idea to one day call this area a pantry formed three years ago after drooling over this awesome pantry by Emerson Made on Design Sponge.
And then falling in love with this cool pipe shelving I spied at the Brick House…
inspired the transformation of this space…

now: a functional beautiful open pantry area…
with new paint, new lighting and DIY industrial pipe shelving. It’s a small space…no room to get a photo straight on of the monstrous pipe shelves but plenty of walking room even with 20 inch deep shelving. I love storing dried goods in glass jars too.

It’s super convenient with it’s location right off the kitchen.
The shelves were designed to fit the wall to ceiling and floor space perfectly and to accommodate our microwave as well as dried goods and baskets. I’m still messing with getting it all organized but I loooove how this once awkward unused space is now functional and pretty! Hurray!

I’ll share more about the lighting challenge soon too.
- Paint – inexpensive way to brighten up a room lacking natural lighting. (accent wall tutorial) Base wall color: Valspar Cool Grey.
- Lighting – The Allen + Roth fixtures from Lowe’s were super affordable at around $57/ea. but electrical wound up costing more than I anticipated due to labor charges because there was no lighting whatsoever in the space from the get go and an outdated electrical outlet. (We did attempt DIY but it was over our heads and I’m not referring to just literally!) The exterior track/wiring adds to the industrial charm.
- Pipe shelving – DIY means custom to fit our space and needs. Not a cheap DIY but still more affordable than purchasing two manufactured floor to ceiling shelving units. I’ll share how we did in in a couple of days! Check back!
- West Elm Fiesta Tile Printed Jute Rug (sold out)
- Flea Market Distressed Galvanized Metal Clock (DecorSteals – currently unavailable)
- IKEA Burken jars with lids
- Large Seagrass Basket (I got a set of three nesting ones on clearance at Wisteria a few years ago.)

- Grocery Sign – I had plans for this to be a DIY sign (mine would have been the same wood stain as the shelving with white lettering, not red) but with so much going on in December and the real life holiday home tour deadline…when I spied it at Hobby Lobby, I couldn’t resist.

Oh I just love that shelving unit. I just finished looking at steel ones at Home Depot online and can not afford them, plus I like the idea of making it my own for my small pantry that has an inner pantry that I have to get to inside of the first pantry. As it is now, it is rather useless to me.
I can not wait to hear the details of how to make it. I have an idea, but I want to hear about all of what and how you made yours.

Love, love, love this pantry! The shelves are amazing and your styling on them is even better! Walking into your pantry is like walking into a regular, decorated room. I just purchased those same lights from Lowes, only I got the light that is three in one unit. Haven’t put it up yet, but it’s so nice to catch a glimpse of what they will look like! I LOVE what you did with the over head lighting! We have a similar situation in our living room but do not want to do anything permanent as we just do not know how much longer we will be in this house. Currently I have a cute hanging light I would love to put up but hated the idea of the cord running down the wall but with this idea I could just run the cord through the conduit. Great idea, Peggy! I do love the look. There was a hook in the ceiling from previous owners, so I’m certain that’s how they had a light hanging in there previously. I’d love to see yours when you do it. I considered painting it while to match the ceiling but then decided to highlight it with oil-rubbed-bronze for an industrial style to go with the shelving.
It looks awesome, Roeshel! I just added similar shelves to my kitchen and the biggest annoyance in the project was getting all the little tags off the pipes. Ugh! Nothing worked other than a lot of elbow grease. I hope yours were less annoying. It’s really a beautiful look. I’ve been toying with same light fixture to put in my kitchen. I knew we were soul mates. 😀

I love this! I have a question about the lights. Do they provide enough light? I wanted the same fixtures buty husband thinks they will not provide enough light for our kitchen. He’s not thrilled with the retro bulbs either snd they are the main reason I fell in love with it in the first place! Thanks!
Oh my goodness, Laura – those lights are BRIGHT! It may be because we installed 3 of them and that the space is small but we absolutely had to install a dimmer switch because there was just too much light. My husband wasn’t a fan of the retro bulbs either. Until we got them. Now we have them in 3 rooms! 😉 Good luck!

This is so funny! I just made a muuuuuch smaller set of selves for my husbands TV room. Just two shelves but I love the ix of wood and metal. The whole space looks great, especially with decorations on it. The green wreath look so nice against the warm wood.

Way , way to many homes were gutted and fabulous pantries and built in were destroyed as the years have tolled on… please consider that what is there, or could be put back… is of great value. I am all about the historical placement of what was there originally and it made me so happy to see you value it too!!! People in their rush to make a space look more open, ect. rip out wonderful pantries, dry sinks hand crafted cupboards and buffets. I love how you up dated it and made this a great space to hold supplies and give your’e eyes a respite if the kitchen is crazy… I go hide in mine if the kitchen gets too full with kids and life…

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!!! this is exactly like what I’ve been dreaming of for a pantry! We have an unused mudroom that I’ve been visualizing with shelving for a pantry. It has a second fridge in there. I’m so excited to see yours and I love, love, love the light fixture. I love how you covered the wire instead of going through the ceiling. Can you tell me more about that? We’ve been racking our brains for the past two months trying to figure out how to wire without cutting up our entire ceiling, since we have no attic space. Makes me so happy to see that someone else has their microwave in their pantry too! Ahhhh! We tore our kitchen down to the studs and just didn’t feel that a microwave was important to our needs, we’d rather have more drawers etc. Love love love your pantry…sending this to my husband 🙂

The red seems sortof a happy accident, IMHO; it ties in the rug. I totally get your original color though, too-that would add richness to the space.

It’s basically 3 of the lights from Lowe’s with the wiring on the outside tapped into an outlet then covered with a plastic track. Hope that helps! xo
So glad I found this while looking for design ideas. I love the entire room, but what really caught my eye was your lighting solution and the lights you used. I have a smallish kitchen- 9′ x 12′ or so, which currently rocks a single string of 80’s track lighting. Yeah 🙂 I don’t want to go the recessed light route and the string of pendants you did is genius. I was hoping you could let me know how much light they put out though. Do you think a string of three like you have would sufficiently light a kitchen a bit bigger than your space? And while the Edison bulbs obviously look amazing, do you they put off enough light? Appreciate any thoughts and opinions. Thank you!

Hi Jennifer. This could be completed in 2 weekends (allowing time for painting pipe if you do and staining shelves). Actually assembly was done in about less than two hours. This size shelf cost us about $400-500 but I love that it’s custom fit to our space and of course, we’ll have it the life of our home. The two store bought bookcases I considered originally were $400 a piece so this was a savings for us and has a lot more charm! Good luck!

Are the pipes hold each shelf attached to the wall or just resting against it?
For our shelves, the pipes are only attached at the top to the wall.
